How to reset the administrator password for Snare Central Server

SUMMARY

About passwords

During installation of Snare Server, your Systems Administrator sets passwords for the following user accounts:

  • root (for emergency hardware-level system administrative activities)

  • snare (for maintenance)

  • snarexfer (which can be used by remote systems to transfer log data to the Snare Server via ftp or scp)

Once installation of the Snare Server completes, an initial password is provided for the Administrator account for the Snare Server web interface.  This password is a randomly generated alpha-numeric password, and 10 characters in length.  You System Administrator would note this password for future reference, and provide this to the Snare Server end user.

Updating the Administrator password within Snare Server web interface

Login to Snare Server via the web browser using the User Name of Administrator and the Password provided above.  Navigate to System : Administrative Tools : User Administration and select the Administrator user.  Update the password and select Modify this User to save.

Updating the Administrator password via SSH

If the password was not provided to the end user at Snare Server installation time, then to reset the password for the Administrator account, it is required to ssh or login to the console with the user id snare.

  1. After login you will be presented with the Snare Server Administration Menu.  Select the Authentication menu item and select OK.

  2. Select Administrator, and select OK.

  3. Update the password.

  4. Verify the password.

  5. At this point, the administrative menu requires elevated privileges to process your password change request. If you have not recently performed other heightened-privilege operations within the administrative menu, you may be asked to enter your 'snare' administrative password. Otherwise, the operation will utilize your cached credentials from a previous step.

  6. Select Logout menu item and select OK.
